Singing superstar John Legend has dismissed rapper Kanye West’s meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump as nothing more than a “publicity stunt”.
Mr West was pictured visiting Trump Tower earlier this week, with Mr Trump saying he ws a close friend and that they had discussed “life” together.
However, Mr Legend, who is a close friend of West, has told media that the meeting was “disapointing”. He added: “I don’t think it’s impossible to talk to Trump about issues, but I won’t be used as a publicity stunt. I think Kanye was a publicity stunt.”
Mr West was a valued mentor to Mr Legend as he started his music career and the pair have worked on a number of projects together.
However, while Mr West has said that if he had voted, he would have voted for Mr Trump, it seems politics are definitely not one of the things the two agree on. Mr Legend described Mr Trump as “corrosive,” adding that he had concerns over what the new President was planning to do. He added: “For Kanye to support that message is very disappointing.”
Mr Legend was a strong supporter of Mr Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton, and has also spoken about how he backed President Barack Obama. While Mrs Clinton had strong celebrity backing, including from Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Mr West is one of very few leading figures in the entertainment industry to have come out in public support of Mr Trump.
It has been reported that he is finding it difficult to get anyone with a high enough profile to perform at his inauguration event in the New Year. So far, only Jackie Evancho, a runner up in America’s Got Talent, has been anncounced to perform, and is suspected to sing the national anthem as Mr Trump officials takes office.
