Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar immediately faced online ridicule after posting an RIP message about Boy George following the death of George Michael. Sarah became confused after news broke that Wham! singer George had died peacefully in his home on Christmas Day, at the age of just 53.
While Sarah tried to pay tribute, she managed to muddle up Eighties pop stars, tweeting: “Do you really want to hurt me? I guess you do 2016 – #ripboygeorge I was truly one of your biggest fans.”
She immediately back tracked after she was contacted by a number of people, tweeting: “Just as sad when you get the correct information. #ripgeorgemichael thank you to everyone who corrected me – it’s still so sad.”
However, she was not quick enough to prevent herself being mocked by many on social media. One joked that Boy George had just checked himself into hospital as a result of her tweet, while another said that her second tweet, to cover up her mistake in the first, had been the icing on the cake. However, others were more supportive, with one adding: “Mistakes happen,” and another saying that she had handled her error graciously.
Singing superstar George Michael passed away at his home in Oxfordshire at around 2pm on Christmas Day. While no official information has been released, other than to say he died peacefully at home, his former manager has said that he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Fans have been flocking to his homes in Oxfordshire and north London to lay floral tributes to their idol and to pay their respects by lighting candles. Meanwhile, celebrities including George’s former bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, his close friend Elton John, and Boy George himself have led tributes on social media. Boy George said that he was thinking of his family, friends and fans, adding that he had a beautiful voice, which would live on in his music.
