Authorities announce that a man they had found running naked in a busy highway in Tampa, Florida has died after officers tried to subdue him. The man has not yet been publicly named.
Early on Wednesday, many had reported seeing a naked man acting irrationally and jumping on cars on the busy Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Florida, just after 5:30am.
This caused police officers to close southbound Dale Mabry from Columbus Drive to right before Interstate 275 for three and a half hours hours until he was captured and subdued.
According to reports from the Tampa area television station Bay News 9, officials subdued the man, and transported him to the St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Stephen Hegarty, a police spokesman, tells local news outlets: “It is a bizarre situation. Apparently this naked man came out of nowhere and started jumping on cars.
He was banging his head on the windshield of a car and he began to bleed.” He damaged at least one vehicle and left behind smears of blood, according to Hegarty.
“He was a danger to the people driving down the road and also a danger to himself,” Hegarty said.
He reportedly also kept kicking and fighting when officers tried to subdue him. Hegarty also said the man had a medical emergency while being rushed to the hospital by paramedics.
Hegarty says the police are yet to investigate whether the man was under the influence of a mind-altering substance, but it seemed to be as though he were.
The cause of his death is also unknown. His identity has not yet been announced to the public. Tampa Police Sheriff Eric Ward and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn were also at the scene.
The southbound Dale Mabry lanes were reopened shortly after 9 am that morning.
